As you may know, every year, the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute organizes the Mother’s Day Walk 4 Peace, an event created to support and uplift mothers who have lost children to violence. 2025 marks the 29th Annual Walk 4 Peace, founded by Clementina Chéry, after the tragic loss of her 15-year-old son, Louis D. Brown, who was caught in crossfire on Geneva Ave in Dorchester in 1996. Over the last 30 years, Clementina has turned her pain into purpose through her work at the Peace Institute, an organization I feel blessed to support in my administrative role.
Many of you know that my brother Damien was murdered in 2017 in a drive-by shooting in Roxbury—simply a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Just seven months prior, my mother Jean passed away at home due to unsafe conditions in her senior living community, and barely a month after her passing, my father, Juvene lost his battle with cancer. As you can imagine, the cumulative grief took a toll on my family, and we are all navigating our own journeys of healing.
Though I have not lost a child, I walk to honor my family and to find solace on a day that is otherwise difficult. While others celebrate Mother’s Day with flowers and brunch, I choose to walk—to step outside of my own thoughts and into a space of remembrance, unity, and healing. Though I may begin the walk overwhelmed by the sheer number of families who have lost loved ones to homicide, I leave feeling supported, encouraged, and at peace.
Will you join me? I invite you to walk with us in honor and celebration of our loved ones. If you're unable to join in person, please consider donating to the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute. Your support will help us reach our fundraising goal to build a larger facility in Dorchester, allowing us to serve the growing community of survivors of homicide.
Thank you for reading, and I hope to see you there!
Grace & Peace, Dionne Latrice

Everyone knew Damien loved to fish just as our father did! Catch it, clean it & cook it!
